My comp keeps freezin, why ?

For some weird reason, my comp keeps freezing all the time when i'm trying to install my high speed internet connection, and now, when i try to shut down my comp, it seems to freeze on the screen that says "windows is now shutting down" and I have to end up shutting it down by the power button.

also, when i try to use my cdroms now the whole comp ends up freezing, but just a few hours ago it was fine)

{{btw,.... the comp is running on a 256mb memory, win98 SE O/S, and a pentium 3 processor)

what are you using to install the internet connection and who is the provider, etc.

Well the service provider is Bell Sympatico (here in Canada), and i'm using the installation cd.

BUT here's the problem now.........

seems like anytime i try to install it, the whole comp freezes, and even when I try to install broadband for AOL, and it goes to detect my dsl modem, it freezes my comp as well.

Could it be that my ethernet card is defective ?
