need internet explorer help PLEASE

my internet explorer used to work fine but i had to wipe my system clean and the computer reinstalled for me, now when i access the internet every page i click on all i get is page cannot be found.
can someone please help me?
i am running win xp i already have service pack 2 installed , if i have to unistall i dont know how to do it.
could you please reply as basically as possible as i dont understand all the thecnical jargon

What type of connection?

How do you connect to the internet? Do you know if the drivers are installed for your modem or NIC?

i am on broadband have a sagem modem i have even tried unistalling service pack 2 but makes no differance
