Need major help with Sony Handycam SR7 on a mac

well I just got the camera to use from a friend, ,I thought it would be super easy to upload videos onto my Macbook,, but nothing works for me at all!!

I even have an mpeg-2 player on quicktime but the files won't play. I don't know what is wrong. I want to edit the files on Final Cut but I can't import them or anything.... If anyone has some insight, please reply.

I did a similar thing on my powerbook with a video camera of a friends. I tried USB, and I tried composite video out to a PC. In the end I was able to borrow a firewire cable and used iMovie. With iMovie and the firewire cable importing was so easy that a 4 year old could have done it, it almost required no user interaction at all.
