Network Adapter Problem

Hi I'm having problems networking a laptop and a pc with a crossover cable.
I don't seem to have any problems with the laptop, as it was networked the same way once before with another pc, but my nice shiny new pc seems to be having issues.
The motherboard is supposed to have an onboard network adapter, and there is the correct port on the back panel but it doesn't show up in Device Manager. Only my external broadband modem shows up under network adapters.
Also there should have been drivers for it on the disc that came with the motherboard but they don't appear to be on there.
I have a Gigabyte RZ 7VT600P - RZ mother board VIA KT600 chipset.
The software that was supposed to be on the cd is listed as VIA Lan Driver :- VIA 10/100 LAN driver for VT6103L chips.
Can anyone help? I've tried everything I can think of.
Thanks!
