Networking 2 computers with different OS

My original network was a laptop connected wirelessly to a router, which was connected to a DSL modem, with the desktop hardwired to the router. Both computers running W98.
The desktop has now been changed to one running XP home. I've run the Network Setup Wizard, but am unable to get the network running.
Should I have disabled Network Neighbourhood on the laptop, and if so, how do I do that.
Is there anything else I should do?

Is the XP desktop able to access the internet? And is your problem not being able to see the other computer on the network? If so then you just need to place the XP machine in the proper workgroup. Right click on my computer, go to properties, then Computer Name tab, down at the bottom click on change to change computer name or join a domain, there you can change which workgroup its in.

Yes, the XP computer is able to access the internet. I have assigned a computer name, and a workgroup to both computers, but neither of them can see each other.
