New soundcard : necessary?

I just bought a new eMachines computer equipped with AC'97 Audio and crappy speakers. The sound pretty much sucks. If I purchase some new, good speakers with a subwoofer (I'm currently looking into purchasing the Creative Labs Inspire T2900) will the sound be any better? Or is a new soundcard necessary?

I'm trying to avoid spending alot, but I watch DVD's and listen to MP3's on this computer, and it's simply just not enjoyable with the sound being produced now.

It really depends on how picky you are. It will definitely be a lot better than any speakers they gave you for free. I'd try it with the new speakers first - see if that cuts it for you. A good new soundcard won't be hard to get or even cost too much if you need one later.
