Newbie RAM question

I'm a computer tech newbie and had a basic question about RAM. I'm currently running 2700 SDRAM (2 512 sticks) on my P4 comptuer. Can you swap out 3200 SDRAM for the 2700? How much increase would I see in multi-tasking power doing this?
