Nintendo as promised on Tuesday published a documentary on the making of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the latest entry in the storied action-adventure franchise and arguably the frontrunner for game of the year.

The documentary is split into three bite-sized segments.

Director Hidemaro Fujibayshi notes in the first 10-minute clip that production got under way in January 2013 with a launch window scheduled for roughly two years later. As development progressed, however, the team realized they needed a lot more time to “make the game as interesting as possible.”

The general direction and broad concept of the game came first, Fujibayshi said, and then the entire staff got together to further tweak its vision. If you recall, the team even made a prototype 2D version of the game using assets from the very first Zelda.

The catchphrase, “break the conventions of the Zelda series,” played a big role as they worked on the title according to technical director Takuhiro Dohta.

Breath of the Wild’s overall story and characters are covered in-depth in another video while Eiji Aonuma, the game’s producer, discusses one of the game’s most beloved features in the final segment. I’m of course referring to the open-air concept in which players are free to roam and explore as they choose.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild arrived on March 3, 2017 on the Wii U and as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch.
