No sound

Hello everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas break. I have a problem, my computor is quite old, the modem is a Mega 865 and I have Windows 2000, just yesterday the sound stopped working, when I plug/unplug my speaker they click or buzz but I have no icon in the bottom toolbar. I tried system restore but this did not work. I went to audio devices but the part where you can move the arrow to the centre is not highlighted and none of the boxes can be ticked to change anything.
