Norton antivirus msg with slow startup

os: windows xp

a -norton antivirus- message comes up the second windows open,
"repairing log on drive E"

then another msg: "norton protection status has encountered a problem and needs to close"

this happens after a relatively slow startup(not the usual)..
any idea what the problem is?

another question: what is the best program to protect from adwares?

Uninstall and re-install Norton.

Get both Adaware and Spybot S&D. Look in this post where to get them and how to install/run them https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic17297.html
Run these (updated!) both at least once a week.

it AVG better?

ive read in a previous post that it is recommended to use AVG antivirus.. and it is said that its much better than notron; lighter and better protection..

is that right? and if yes, could you please tell me why?

AVG is free and vary capable. I have not yet seen it compared in its current version 7 to other AV programs, but quite a number of forum-members (including myself) are using it on their home-PCs.
It gives all the protection you need, when combined with an also free firewill from e.g. Kerio or Agnitum or ZoneAlarm.
It is definitely a whole load less intrusive on your system-resources than Norton/Symantec. If you read some of the posts in this forum and in Other Software, you will find tons of people that have issues with Norton, but none that have an AVG problem.
I have banned anything from them from my PCs many years ago, and would not touch them anymore with a 10-foot barge-pole (but then, I hate Norton/Symantec and am probably/definitely biased).
