Five of the biggest names in the industry have come together to create a Virtual Reality consortium. The companies, typically rivals in the VR market, are hoping to promote responsible development and adoption of VR around the world. The Global Virtual Reality Association has high profile members including Google, HTC Vive, Facebook's Oculus, Samsung, and Acer Starbreeze with their StarVR.
As with any industry consortium, the GVRA will exist to bring together experts and focus on best practices. The VR world is currently a mess from a standards perspective. Sensors don't work across brands, games don't always work on different platforms, and manufacturers have been hesitant to share any information about their products. While members will likely pursue their own vision of VR the goal is to have some unification of standards in terms of software and hardware to build upon.
One notable brand not in the discussion was Valve with their Steam VR.
Progress in the field of Virtual Reality has come at a very fast pace so increased research and dialogue across the industry can help make sure that it continues.
