Onboard sound...can't set bass/treble!

Is there any way to set the bass/treble in the advanced options in the volume control in XP? I open up volume control, go to options, and Advanced Controls is greyed out. Without an onboard sound card, I was able to go here, and change the bass/treble, now it just doesn't sound the same at all, and it won't let me change it :\
