Outlook Express - outward emails get trapped in the outbox

as the title suggests every time I send an email particularly with an attachment it spends an age in the outbox, eventually, and when I send them to myself as a test several copies of each email arrive. I thought it was something to do with Mcafee a/v but when I deselected the 'scan email and attachments' box the problem still continues. OE gives me an error message every time but not a reference number with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This behavior can be caused by any of the following conditions:

You opened the e-mail message in your Outbox before the e-mail message is sent.

You are working offline and have not made a connection to the Internet.

Your sending options are not set to send e-mail messages immediately by using the correct connection.

Your mail folders or e-mail messages within the folders are damaged or corrupted.
 
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005

is the error message I get. I have searched for Outbox in order to delete it but Search command does not find it.

Again, any help much appreciated.
