Philips mp3 only works with stereo

my mp3 player played most of the songs i had on it when i first put songs on it, but some others wouldn't show up unless i plugged it into the USB port on my stereo and played it that way. now it won't even start up past the stage where it says 'philips' on the screen unless it's hooked up to my stereo. there's no way to reset it; it only leads you to an update page. help?

....ok somehow it magically decided to turn on all the way after i took all the files off. But what about the issue with only some songs showing up unless it's in my stereo?
