Please help safe my Pentium II

Hi, for some people, it's amazing that I'm still using a Pentium II but it works well until recently, it "hangs" whenever I shut down the computer. Wouldn't it hurt the hard disk evetually if I have to keep doing this, force shut down? What can be wrong with it? I suspect the WLAN card & the router, that when I shut down, a blue screen comes up & say something like it's not responding, or something, but I'm not sure (if it's the WLAN card).

I surf the internet a lot, researching for materials. Does this affect a computer's performance? I regularly delete the temp folder, cookies, history etc. What else can I do?

Can someone assist please? THANKS!
