Prescott??

Hello....I am looking to upgrade and I am trying to understand the different between a normal P4 and Prescott P4. From what I have read, the Prescott is suppose to be faster.

I really don't understand, because for $349 you can get a 'Intel Socket 775 Pentium 4 3.2GHZ 800MHZ FSB CPU'

However for $325 you get a Intel S478 Pentium 4 3.2EGhz 800FSB Prescott HT CPU

As you can see, both are 3.2Ghz, so if the Prescott is suppose to be a faster and better processor, why is it cheaper??? Does anyone recommend the Prescott over the normal P4....are there any problems with the Prescott??? I am kinda only starting out in this kinda stuff, so go easy...Thanks in advance

My understanding is that the Prescott processors run rather hot.
Also, S478 is already older technology, compared to S775.

They are both Prescott cores. The 775 is newer technology. Both processors have the same cache size. If there is a certain mobo you like go with which socket is compatable. By the way, NewEgg has both those processors for under $230

Thanks for the replys...it makes more sense now...As for the prices, I am in Australia, so that's why my prices seemed a bit high :approve:

Anyway, I think I'll go with the 775...thanks again everyone..very quick responses :grinthumb

But you would need a s775 mobo for a s775 cpu.

Yeh that's cool....I'm upgrading everything except for the hard drive and DVD Burner (almost a whole new computer)

Be aware that you will have to reinstall everything, when you change mobos!
Guess that's where the DVD-burner comes in handy...
