Problem with burning cd's and dvd's

I'm having a problem with burning cd's and dvd's. I've tried different types of cd's and dvd's, but every time I try to burn a cd or dvd I get an error saying I don't have a cd or dvd in my burner. I know I do, cause I just put it in there. When I go to properties, it says everything is working properly. Can anyone help me out there?

Did you just install this burner? or has it been installed and working fine till now? if you just installed it make sure you have the jumper properly set. also check in device manager under IDE ATA|ATAPI Contollers, look under the advanced tab on the IDE channel the drive is on and make sure it is operating in DMA mode and not PIO mode.
