Problem with dvd rw

can anyone tell why and or what I should do the get my computer to read that there is a disk in my dvdrw. I have a hp dvd writer 200j in an hp media center pc 873n. most of the time when I put a blank dvd disk into the drive it detects it as a cd at least when you go to my computer. but if I try to burn on it the computer usually gives me some error message saying there is no disk in the drive. But occasionally it works, not that often though.

A number of things can cause that, but We need some more info. What CD authoring software are you using?
- Check for Firmware updates for your Writer.
-Turn off Windows writing software, Property page of the Drive
these can be a start.

Also check the Burner's docs for media recommendations...some burners don't play nice with certain budget blanks.
