Problem with rebooting, screen half empty and half striped...

My friend's laptop has a problem upon rebooting.
It's a Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows OS, and all he did was shut it down normally. When he turned it on again, half of the screen was black, and the other half had vertical blue and green stripes. Trying to reboot it again didn't work either.

Does anyone know what happened or how to fix it? Any help would be great!

Sounds like a job for a professional, laptops are notoriously difficult to fix when they go wrong (sounds like a hardware fault, graphics probably).
