I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, if this is the wrong one, my bad.

My friend decided to run a system restore. He then decided he didn't like it and Unrestored it. Halfway through the Unrestore, he accidentally knocked the cord lose and the computer got unplugged. When he boots now he gets a screen with the message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file"

I told him to try booting in Safe mode, but no change. So if anyone has an idea of something to do please help me out here.

Thanks.

PS: He also tried to just put in the actual Windows XP Installation CD in, but he still gets the same screen"=.

You have to tell the computer to boot from the CD.

Boot into the recovery console on the CD and run chkdsk on the hard drive and pray it gets fixed.

Thanks for the help. I'll tell him that tomorrow and post again.
