Problems booting up XP Pc

Hi there. I'm new here but have been looking through some of the forums. Although I have read a thread along the same lines as the problem we have, it is a little over my head so please bare with me with if this is a little tired for you guys.

I am looking at mates Pc. He has installed a new hard drive with XP on it and now he is getting the following error followed by the blue screen of death.

Autocheck program not found. Skipping autochek.

The thread I looked at was a little complicated for my small brain so I was wondering if someone could give me an *****s guide to repairing the problem.

I should also add that he believes the problems occurred as soon as he installed Norton's. The guy at the pc shop said they don't have a clue and Norton's support managed to get him up to this point. It was worse before I believe.
