Ram problems

Hi
This is the first time I have used this site.
I need help?
My pc was running ok with the 256MB of RAM in it.One day on a whim I decided to invest in another stick of RAM for it, Only this stick has 512MB of RAM on it.
The 512 stick works perfectly well, but heres the problem my computer does not recognize the original 256MB of RAM, and infact it wont boot up if the 256MB stick is connected. But if I insert the stick after boot up, my computer recognizes it.
Any suggestions?

You should NEVER fit ram into a powered up pc unless you want to kill it!!!!

Your new ram and your old ram are probably different speeds so it's not a good idea to mix them!!!!

didn't even know you can stick it in there while running .. I would think it would freeze up.


like Rik said they are probably different kind and speed.
