Ram upgrade

This might sound silly please do help!!

I am planning to get a ram upgrade

from my 512 MB DRR 266 to 1GB DDR 400

how much performance gain can i expect since this entire upgrade purpose is for performance gain

say if i upgrade to 512 MB of DDR 400 will there be any performance gain and how much will that be.

If you get 512mb DDR400, it may still perform worse than its equivilant DDR266, depending on the CAS Latency, if the 266 has a latency of 2, it will perform better than DDR 400 at CaS Latency 3. I'd recomend the 1gig DDR400, because it's larger and potentially faster, but make sure it has a latency of 2.5 or under for best performance.

Thanks flincy, I am planning to go for 1 Gig of Transcend DDR 400 Ram it is around Rs.1500 ($ 35) costlier than the kingston one which are very prevalent here in india.

i think the cas is 2.5 but will have to check that.
