Resetting removable drive as basic rather than removable

I have a new PCMCIA HD that shows up as a removable drive, with serious delays in reading and writing. My other PCMCIA HD, and my USB drives all show up as LOCAL DRIVES rather than as REMOVABLE drives. How can I reset the new drive so that it will register as a LOCAL DRIVE and not as a removable drive? Reformatting didn't help. And I couldn't change things with Computer Management...
Suggestions?

It looks as if the new drive, unlike the others, does NOT have an MBR partition. Could this be the problem? How can I change the partition? Will fdisk do the trick?

MBR is not the problem, thats Master Boot Record, you have absolutely no reason for that on a hard drive that isn't booting an OS.

Make sure the drive is in DMA mode rather than PIO.
