Hey everyone.....I have been thinking about this for a while and want to get your info on it.

I have been thinking of building a retro gaming machine dedicated to certain manufactures and classic games such as Quake 1-3, the original UT ec....

The hardware will consist of a classic AMD SLOT A CPU (not sure of the speed yet)

And a 3DFX Voodoo Card, probably the Voodoo 5 5500 (due to the eyecandy in Glide orientated games, UT does look the best on a voodoo card.

The case will be modified or decorated in such to honor these games and hardware. 3DFX being more of the main theme of the case.

other hardware thoughts:

256-512 mb PC133

40 gig IDE hard Drive

Windows 98 SE

What are your thoughts ?

Anyone have any of the above hardware that you would donate or sell ( I would pay shipping of course.)

Let me know what you think of the idea !!!!!!!!

Good idea - but UT looking best in Glide? I disagree - Unreal yes - UT no, although I do agree that for retro gaming there were plenty of games that looked best in glide. If I had the space to dedicate to a retro gaming machine I would love to do that - especially modding the case to reflect its purpose. Also, why not Win2K on this machine? At least that way you can leave it up all the time and not worry about frequent reboots.

Well

Very good points and isnt Unreal Tournament = UT ? Thats what I always called it....And UT is based on Glide isnt it ?

The reason for 98 being it is somthing that I associated with that era. Yeah it is a better OS all around, but it just dont give me the old school feel. If I was to put Win2k on there I might as well just use xp and change it to classic view. Other main reason is that I have like 12 authentic copies of 98se with COA.

Reboots dont really scare me to much concidering this machine will have minimal use ie just games and there isnt a whole lot that it will be used for besides playing the classics. Its on time will consist of only when I play games on it.

I have such a PC setup and working. Pentium 3 1000EB, 512mb PC-133, Voodoo5 5500, Windows 98se.

Works great. Windows 98se is needed for the Voodoo5 as the 1.04.x beta drivers for 98se were the last official drivers from 3dfx. There are some 3rd party ones hacked for nt/xp/2k, but they aren't as well supported as the true-blue's.

I'm also corked at a P3-1ghz as the P4's had the wrong agp voltage for the Voodoo5. AMD would be a consideration but seems a waste to cramp a good old Socket-A on such a Win98 box hehe.

Happy gaming.

LoL

Thanks for the info....

Do you agree that the voodoo card makes them classic glide games look prettier than even the best modern day card ?

Unreal and Unreal Tournament are two different games. Unreal was definitely built with Glide in mind, but UT runs in both D3D and OpenGL. I don't even remember inherent glide support. Good point on the Voodoo/Win98 issue - forgot about that. My last Voodoo card was a 12 Meg Voodoo 2 because when 3dfx made a blanket statement that there was no need for 32-bit color depth in gaming yet I quickly strayed. Guess it didn't really matter much because I was truly in love with my TNT by that point.

Software rendering, D3D, OpenGL, Glide, S3 MeTaL, it's all there.

Cheap gaming computer....nice. here are the thoughts:

I once read in a nonfiction book that Windows 98 was 98 times bigger than all the other operating systems, and that it has 98 times more bugs. I would get Windows 2000 at least....come on 98? that's old school :D

I think he's stated that old school is the point here and with the Voodoo card he's pretty much justified Win98

Yeah

This PC is not going to be used for anything but running some online game play and when the hommies feel like it, some old school LAN.....But yeah I know 98 isnt the pinacle of OS's but like I said its the best choice for the look and funtuality that I want.

There will be no P2P programs on it.

No MSN, Yahoo Messanger, AOL ect.....

No looking on warez sites

And No PORN !!!!!!!! (I have other more highly secure puters for that) :D

So im not really worried about sercurity lol. This computer will maybe be used a couple hours a week if that. (anytime I get the retro bug and get tired of getting the sh-t fragged out of me in FEAR.

I already have the CPU, a buddy of mine dusted off his kinda rare 1000mhz Slot A Athlon CPU for me, I know they didnt make many of them and the ones I have found for sale in the past on e-bay have gone for $$$$ guess they are kinda collectors items. And I guess he was keeping it for that reason ......Anyways I had to pull some teeth to get this CPU from him but when I told him my Idea he gladly said that he would love to see it go to a good cause instead of collecting dust in a storage drawer.

All I need is a Voodoo 5 and a motherboard......Well a case too but I need to put some thought into this. It needs to look retro, not new age with lights and stuff all over it. It needs to be classy sheek, but needs to look bad *** also....Im thinking of looking around for a decent late 90's first generation type ATX case that catchs my eye and probably paint it to suit my needs. Not sure how I will tackle that part of it yet. I want this baby to really be dedicated to soluting and honoring the hardware inside.

Look for an old InWin Qxxx case (I can't remember the numbers after the Q - maybe it's 400) Those were great cases back in the day and many oldschool overclockers had them. I have one, but I never get rid of my old stuff.

Well i have a bit of a voodoo card collection, including my old orchid righteous and 3 other cards if i remember. I will have to dig em out when i get a chance.
I also have a 5500 but its at a Friends house at the mo.:)
