ROM drive locks up-Disappears from "MyComputer"

I have experienced times where my CD ROM drive locks-up. When this happens, you can't open the drive to remove the disc. Also, I have noticed that the drive disappears from the "MY Computer" screen/listing. I have looked through the hardware manager screen for settings and run self diagnostics by things seem to be in order. The problem can be fixed by rebooting, however it is happening more frequently. It usually happens when running games, but has also occurred with a generic disc that I burned some files onto.

Any ideas how to eliminate this problem?
Should I look for a new driver? Where would I look?
-I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with all factory original parts.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Start by uninstalling your optical drive/s from your device manager. Reboot your system, and let Windows redetect them.

If that doesn`t help. Maybe try a different ide cable. Also, check that the jumpers are correct, and not loose.
