I'm having a problem with the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the toolbar, it apparently thinks my Hard Drive / CD drive are "Removable hardware" and it has them located in there, so if I accidently click it, it will close my Hard Drive or CD drive which is very annoying.

Is there a way to remove this Icon without having to unplug these Hardware?

Here's what the Icon looks like and what it shows when you click it.

It's the Green one with the Arrow thing.

If you have a Nforce4 Based Motherboard and your sata drives are showing up in Safely Remove Hardware, this registry hack will allow you to fix it.

1. Click Start -> Run
2. Execute regedit
3. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata

4. Click Edit
5. Select New > DWORD value
6. Name this DWORD: DisableRemovable
7. Double click this new DWORD and set its value to one (1).
8. Close Regedit and reboot

Stupid message "safely remove hardware", can't be removed even if you tried !

The reason that they are showing as removable devices is probably because they are connected via SATA. You can plugin-in/unplug SATA devices while the computer is running, so the safely remove hardware icon is shown in case you want to do that.

As for removing the icon, I can't think of a way off-hand to do it.

just pretend it's not there -- it does no harm if you leave it alone :)
