Saving Windows settings fro a new install on 2k.

Can the file 'ntuser.dat' be saved and replace the same file in a new install of 2k so I don't have to redo all the Windows settings? I assume that is the correct file.

What is the difference between the file in the root directory and the one under my user name in Documents and Settings?

the ntuser.dat file in your profile under documents and settings winds up getting imported into the hkey_user part of the registry when you log on.

although you could import one profile from one machine to another, and it should work OK, there might be some problems.

I would export the whole profile using the setting in my computer properties (copying the whole profile to another folder) and ensuring that the "permitted to use" section is changed to read everyone.

things might be OK if all the same software is installed to all the same paths with the same version of software, etc, but in the end you may be opening up a can of worms with this and may as well have a new fresh profile with a new installation.
