Screen freezes during installation

I just started installing windows and it freezes when it is examining my hard drive. It says "examing 95394 MB disk 0 at Id 0 on Bus 0 on atapi" and it does nothing.

SysSpec:

Asus p4pe
intel 3.0e
Maxtor 100 gig sata
evga 6600gt
1gig ramm

Have you checked the connections from the HDD to the motherboard? Sometimes they can wiggle loose. That would be my first test, the second would be changing out the ribbons to make sure they aren't defective.

Did that and it still freezes.

i have to admit i had a previous copy of XP on there with sp1 (****** copy) and so i bought a new legal copy of XP with sp2. maybe that can help to explain the problem
