Seagate to Increase Warranties To 5 Years

Seagate Technology has just increased the warranty of pretty much all of their hard drives to 5 years.

"I think the reason we're doing it – well, there's a couple of reasons, actually," said Joe Cousins, senior director of global channel marketing at Seagate. "We're doing a pretty good job reaching out to customers, and evaluating their needs… also, Seagate's warranty of five years rather than one to three years is also a statement of our competence, quality, and reliability investments."

This is in conflict with a recent trend towards shortened warranties. IBM have received criticism for placing limitations on the usage of drives like the DeskStar 120GXP, which was only rated for eight consecutive hours of operation per day.

I guess I'll be buying Seagate from now on :=).

I was planning to get a Seagate hard drive even before this announcement. All the better I suppose.

Interestly enough, I've seen hundreds of bad hard drives, but only a few of them have been Seagate.

While I'm sure Seagate doesn't have as large of a market share as WD or Maxtor, I think it is interesting to note.

I've never seen a bad Samsung.

I have a dead Seagate. But that was my fault, moving it around in tight case while it was on. Thankfully it was a free drive, in a free computer, and only a 2 or 4 gig drive.
