Search function not working

I'm using XP and when I click on "Start" then "Search" and get the search box and then type something in it, the search begins, but before long, it seems to get stuck in a particular file--and it's not the same file every time. For example, the last couple of times it's gotten hung up in C:\Documents and Settings\anyfile.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Is your indexing service turned on? Have you made any major changes to your pc software lately, or run any registry cleaners?

I just enabled my indexing service and started it. Now the search function seems to be working. I appreciate you help immensely.
