For some reason my pc needs quite some time to turn off completely. It gets to the "logged off" window and then it takes… hmmm… around minute or two to go off. Do you have any ideas what can be causing that?

Here's my HijackThis log if it can help (btw, I know it's a long list so any suggestions what to remove?)

Is it generally only slow when you shut down?

I've heard of some people having problems with stylexp becoming extremely resource intensive.

From my experience slow shutdowns are caused by the amount of applications that windows has to close. The more you close before you shutdown windows the fewer it has to close itself.

Hope this helps.

Olja, Hello again.

Your PC is top-heavy from all that Symantec/Norton stuff.
As HoopaJoop said, that Stylexp is heavy on resources, as is the Steganos running all the time.
And the Stardock program eats resources as well.
Do you need to run both Messenger and ICQ?
Do you need to have Word open all the time?

To make your PC faster, you should uninstall that Stardock, and run XP in the "classic" mode. This makes it look like Windows 2000, but it will run a lot better.
You start by changing the look of the Start menu. Click on the Start button. Right-click on the blue area at the top of the Start menu window and select Properties (it's the only choice). In the subsequent window, select Classic Start menu and then click OK.
Second, you change the look of the windows and other elements of the interface. Right-click on the desktop and select Properties. From the dropdown list under Themes, select Windows Classic, then click OK. That's it!

The Java-stuff is NOT a virus, but you don't need it to run. Jusched.exe is only checking for updates, waste of resources.
And the extra button and tools are not needed either.
The only baddie is the Trojan SOUNDMAN.EXE.

Run HJT in safe mode and let it "fix":

C:\Program\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\jusched.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\npjpi150.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java-konsol - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\npjpi150.dll

Then delete SOUNDMAN.EXE

Delete everything in your Temp-file
C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Temp

Then relax and get the gravadlax and the Aquavit out.
Happy Christmas!

Could an app like trillian help here? I for one swear by it, but I don't know if it will take less system resources than having both apps open.

Realblackstuff,
hello to you too ;)

Do you have any other suggestion for antivirus/firewall program? I browsed the net, read that many have problems with Internet security Suite (even on this forum) but, what else to use? Go back to my AVP or something else? Btw, I have no problems with Norton (that I can notice), except as it looks like from slowing my pc on shut down.

Stardock (and TuneUp WinStyler) I'll keep no matter how many resources it needs. As a girl I will keep my "right" to have one or two unnecessary things on pc :D

Messenger/Icq Now I got confused! I only use ICQ and in Windows components Messenger is unchecked so now I have no idea where it comes from in my running processes nor how to get rid of it?

Word… It was running last time I ran HijackThis and that's why it shows on the log. Sorry!

I keep getting this "You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again." so i had to make a couple of replies, sorry!

/.../
Steganos… I like it just because of the "one click destruction" button as it is useful for my guy to delete his activity an the net while I am not around :D That way I don't have to clean up the mess after him, even though it happens rarely. But I am thinking of uninstalling it and then see if I can install only this component instead of all since I don’t use them (shredder, safe, encryption…)

Ok, that's about it…
And now you really confused me wit SOUNDMAN.exe
I noticed it some time ago in my temp folder (it didn't got deleted automatically) and I browsed the web to see what it is. I found out that it came with Realtek sound card (more info here: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/soundman/).
Now I don’t have it in HijackThis Log but I still have it in C:\Windows as 66kB program. Should I get rid of it?

So, here's my new Hijack log and more precise info – it takes exactly 30sec from "shutting down" until pc actually shuts down.

@ HoopaJoop
Yup, pc is slow only on shut-down, otherwise it works fine.
And, I turn it off always the same so that's why I noticed it got slower – I turn off all programs I use but not the ones that auto-run (i.e. Norton, Core..)
But as you can see I got rid of StyleXP, it wasn't as useful as I thought it would be.
Thanks for advice! :)

@ realblackstuff (again!)
I forgot to ad - I hate gravad lax! :haha:

Leave SOUNDMAN.EXE where it is for the moment, but rename it to SOUNDMAN.IXI.
If it is a Real program, it will be asked for when you use Realplayer. You can then rename it again.
Otherwise eventually delete it.
The PC looks clean otherwise.
Hard to advise on Security though. I was using ExtendiaAVK antivirus, but its real-time scanning slowed my system too much down (only have an AMD1900). So I changed to the free AVG7, which does a splendid job. I have had the Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro for years, and I would not miss that for anything.
AVG7 and Outpost Pro could definitely work on your PC. I have not seen a Virus or Trojan in years!

Another cause for slowness to shut down is an abundance of system restore points (START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/DISK CLEANUP is the WTG) and or/also a desparate need for a defrag of yer HDD to be done.
:)

So what do you think mister Real, can this Norton Internet Security be the reason for delayed turn off?
It's my fault I didn't noticed it immediately… That way I would have known what I installed (or did) to cause it.

Bluetracker,
I have only one "restore point" and defrag is done yesterday. Any new ideas? :)

From the total of 76 entries in your HJT-log, 26 are for Norton/Symantec alone!
That is ONE-THIRD of your background programs.
All these programs need to be switched off at turn-off, so may well be the cause.

It is a pig of a job to get it all off your PC. It is almost faster to reinstall from scratch.

However, you will have a muche leaner, meaner and faster machine without it.
A good software firewall (free) is available here http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html
and AVG antivirus (free) is available here: www.grisoft.com
