Slow Thinkpad 600X w/W2000

I have recently started using my Thinkpad 600X that has been idle for quite some time (1-2 years). As it is my backup machine, I reformatted the C drive and then loaded W2000 Pro.

The problem is the machine is running VERY slow. The W2000 install took hours (3-5)! Just to boot is 10-20 minutes. I get no obvious indication of errors.

Any thoughts on why it is so slow and suggestions on resolving it?

Couple of extra data points:
- It is slow at all times. Startup, normal usage, and shut down.
- Rarely see the hard drive light run steady, just periodic flickers.
- As it has been idle, the battery is dead (and bad) and I am running off of AC
- It has 192MB of RAM
- Have not loaded any applications other than what was part of the W2000 Pro install CD.

Check device manager for missing drivers or problems, and make sure you have all the latest drivers of course.

Is the 600x 100% ACPI compliant?

Changing computer type in device manager from ACPI to APM / Standard PC may fix this problem. I have run into a few systems that have run very poorly because of ACPI.

Before you do this - A word of caution - It does not always work properly and many times you OS will be rendered unbootable. Only attempt this if you are familiar with how to repair Windows 2000 via the Windows 2000 CD.
