Solve lag spikes with CAT5-cable?

I play the online multi player game Call of Duty 2. I have wireless internet, because of this I get lag spikes in the game. Someone told me I can fix this with a CAT5-cable. I'm interested in purchasing this, but I still have some questions.

1. My modem is about ten meters from my computer, is this a problem?
2. Other computers are also dependant from this modem for the wireless internet, if I plug in this cable, how will this effect the other computers?

Thanks

No

You may lose your local network Not Internet

Sorry for being very brief, but I need to go soon
(Back later though)

How do you have to connect the cable then? Many websites tell me to just connect the modem to the pc with the cable, but the 'how to' is not clear to me...

and how is it possible that the other computers don't lose their connection to the Internet, because the modem sends a signal to
1. the router (to all the computers)
OR
2. only one computer through the cable?
Or am I incredibly wrong right now?
