Sound card install (Help Please!)

Help Please!

I can't get my sound to work I get this error... there's no active mixer available.You must install mixer devices from the add/remove hardware wizard in the control pane. This application will exit. Can anyone help me out please? How do I know if my soundcard is installed and if not how can I get one?thanks

To help you out, we need some more info...

What OS are you using (WinXP Pro, WinXP Home, Win2k?)

Is it a homebuilt computer, or built by a manufacturer?
If it's the first, what are the components?
If it's the latter, who built it? And what model is it?

Lastly, did the sound use to work?

If you can answer these Q's, we'll do our best to help you out... (Though there might come more Q's later on)
