Sound Grinder

Ive had a problem for some time with sound grinding whenever a program is first opened. eg there will be a song playing then ill open ftp and then there will be static, grinding noises and sometimes even high pitched beeps. yet some programs dont cause problems when they are opened such as xfire which has no effect. im using ac 97, onboard graphics 1gig ram, amd 64 3400. any help would be appriciated
