Study suggests risky and criminal online behavior among teens has become almost normalized

A hot potato: Has a generation that grew up with the internet become normalized to risky, delinquent, and criminal online behavior? A new study among young people suggests this is the case, with just under half of participants admitting to conduct that could be considered illegal in most regions.

As reported by The Guardian, the EU-funded study carried out in collaboration with the cybercrime center at Europol covered 8,000 people in the 16-19 age group in nine European countries.

Digital piracy was a widespread practice that one in three survey participants admitted to. Elsewhere, one in four said they had tracked and trolled people online, one in eight have engaged in online harassment, and one in 10 have engaged in hate speech or hacking.

Other criminal activities the teens admitted to include posting revenge porn and hate speech, non-consensual sending of intimate images, and money muling, which involves receiving money from a third party and passing it on for a commission. More than 90% of these transactions are linked to cybercrime, meaning the mule is an accomplice as they are laundering the proceeds of the crimes.

Almost three-quarters of males admitted to some form of cybercrime or online risk-taking. The figure was slightly lower among females (65%). Forty-four percent of people said they had watched online pornography.

"The research indicates that a large proportion of young people in the EU are engaging in some form of cybercrime, to such an extent that the conduct of low-level crimes online and online risk-taking has become almost normalised," said Julia Davidson, a co-author of the study and professor of criminology at the University of East London (UEL).

Looking at how long the participants spent online, half said four to eight hours per day, while four out of ten said more than eight hours per day, mostly on their phones. As we saw in a different survey back in August, YouTube remains the platform of choice for teenagers. Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Snapchat were also popular. Facebook, it seems, is earning its reputation as a social media platform for "older people."

Of the nine countries in the survey, Spain had the highest proportion (75%) of participants admitting to a mix of criminal and risky behavior. The UK was lowest with 58%. The country sees its online safety bill return to parliament this week, which requires tech companies, possibly including OnlyFans, to protect their users from illegal content such as child abuse images and "legal but harmful" content.

One again, as has been repeated many, many, many times .... giving the big IP's and software companies automatic protection against liabilities was never a good idea and now, considering their size and the various antic's their illegal activities there is an immediate need to strip away their protections and make them fall in line.

Oh no, people say means things on the internet! The pearl clutchers will be working overtime with this!

Oh no, people are pirating our overpriced poorly made trash instead of paying inflated prices for it! Whatever shall we do?!?

These “criminal actions” come from the same countries that think hurting someone’s feelings is worth the same jail time as murder. It’s not surprising by they think all youngins are delinquits.

The fact that Hate Speech is considered a crime in many parts of the West… how we have fallen.
Hitler and Goebbels agree.

If you have a problem not being allowed to talk sh*t about other people, feel free to emigrate to North Korea, Russia, China, or other lovely countries. There you can do whatever you please.... oh wait, they may shoot you from a cannon, just because. I guess that's much better for you?

The mere fact that you actually believe hate speech laws are a "fall" is astounding.

Given that this survey was funded by the EU, they would have used the EU's formal definition of illegal hate speech, which is pretty specific about what it covers.

Also, a reminder to everyone about our community guidelines, especially the first item in the bullet point list.

Even many in the US don't get that certain things do not fall under 1st Amendment free-speech rights. I'm posting this link, in part, because it seems that people keep repeating the same arguments over and over and expect different results. https://freespeechdebate.com/case/the-brandenburg-test-for-incitement-to-violence/ The other part of my posting it is that it covers a SCOTUS ruling on the definition of "free speech".
Also, a reminder to everyone about our community guidelines, especially the first item in the bullet point list.
Unfortunately, at least as I see it, hiding behind a computer has become a convenient way to defy ethical behavior.

In all these studies the devil is in the detail - plus at the hard end money muling - they probably hit most boxes .
For 16-19 Years old the piracy and pornography is probably too low - porno especially. Also for piracy someone giving you the songs won't be piracy would it ??? ( eg stupid rules in some countries gays are only those who take it - yeah that hate is weird in homophobic countries )
Sexting is what teens do.
Tracking - probably covers a wide range - from someone investigating someone's digital foot print for an hour to weirdo stalking - Plus some teen infatuated or in competition with someone may track them.

Not to lessen sexual violence against women - but when you hear astounding percentages.
It's self reported by their feelings - some guys wolf whistled at me - and they were ugly and not cute - to horrible violation all lumped together.

So repeat devil is in the detail - otherwise just a tool to mis-use - That money muling seems real high

Wait... there's pornography on the internet? Are they sure? Studies are supposed to replicable, I think they should have a second group of researchers confirm these results.

I'm not sure if it's the study, or the article, or a graph out of context, possibly grouping together some not-that-related items, but if every one of those activities is a "risky and criminal" behavior something is really wrong with the EU.

Typically when I see an agenda like this if you dig deep enough you find funding from the likes of the MPAA which would like to criminalize file sharing (vs it being a civil offense). Not sure if they're involved here, or perhaps in other ways with these researchers, but it wouldn't shock me.

Piracy is" Risky and criminal"
People who dont have money dont buy it anyway.
They could be able to buy things they are aware of when they do though.
Piracy is a good thing in moderate amounts

If it's intended to incite violence or harm than why wouldn't it be? In any case the context is risky and criminal behaviour. It's in the title.
Absolutely true.

Important to remember how hate speech and general arguing/fighting are different. The lines have been intentionally blurred before, and it hasn't been managed well from the beginning.

The only ones who refer to it as "falling" are the ones who engage in hate speech. The overwhelming majority of sane and intelligent people refer to it as "The advancement of a modern civilised society".

Boy, it must suck to be so evil that one is triggered by illegality of evil acts.

Hate speech laws are a blatant violation of human rights.

The very first thing the Communists did was to criminalize open discussion and questioning of their policies.

The US Founding Fathers understood this principle. That's why Freedom of Speech was placed at the beginning of the Bill of Rights.

Hmmmm... forgive me for being a little blunt here. Look at what you wrote. You call freedom lovers the following:

1. a small minority
2. insane
3. unintelligent
4. evil
5. triggered (emotionally unstable)

That's hate speech by any standard. You also denounce 'hate speech' while engaging in it. That's called psychological projection. You might look closer at the basis for your motivations.

There is literally zero difference between 'hate' speech and angry or contentious speech. Banning 'hate' speech will also ban angry speech.

Hate speech is merely a label used to suppress opposing points of view. The angrier the opponents get, the more they get accused of 'hatred'. Very convenient.

Bullcrap.

So hate speech laws are applied by communists? I guess SCOTUS must be a bunch of communists by that reasoning. Perhaps we should terminate the constitution, then, since it empowers SCOTUS.
The US Founding Fathers understood this principle. That's why Freedom of Speech was placed at the beginning of the Bill of Rights.
I don't think so. SCOTUS has decided that incitement to violence does not constitute 1st amendment protected speech in the US because it is not necessary for the free and open exchange of ideas.

Free and open exchange of ideas is why, according to that SCOTUS ruling, there is a 1st amendment protecting free speech. If you think that the 1st amendment gives anyone the right to defame or bully others without consequence, then I think you should review SCOTUS decisions on 1st amendment rights.

Many times I saw animals having sex on Animal Planet. Does that count as animal pornography?
If not, then humans having sex is just part of biological study of mammal reproduction.
Kids are actually studying biology in their spare time. They deserve a reward.
