Suddenly slow connection speed

I used to get connection speeds of 38 to 42 but suddenly, for no apparent reason, I am getting speeds of 18 to 22. The only thing I can think of is that one of the automatic Windows updates changed something. Any ideas?

connection speeds of what? kps? mbps? is a dial up? dsl? wireless? isdn? connection

I should have explained that I live in the sticks and have no access to anything other than dialup so it would be kbps

Have you bought a new phone and plugged it in to the same line somewhere? The amount/type of other devices connected to your phone line can slow it down - try removing everything else and seeing if it changed your speed.
