Take a Drive Image from a USB external HD?

If I take my laptop HD with NTFS out and put it in a USB-enclosure, then hook that up to my PC, can then my PC use DriveImage to take an image of that USB drive?
And could I restore that image back onto the USB-drive?
Anybody ever tried?

I use Acronis Drive Image 9.x, no problem with that. I only make image of OS partition.
