Temporary Freezing

I have a new PC (P4 3.0 HT, 1gig OCZ RAM, GeForce 5500) that freezes for 30 sconds or so quite often. For example scrolling in firefox sometimes locks the browser for a while. This is a fresh install so I do not think spyware could be the problem. All the freezes are application specific.

This problem seems to get worse the longer the PC is on but the problems are significant right after boot as well. The windows error log gives a critical error at 0x0000000 message when some programs crash entirely after a freeze.

I have swapped the RAM as well as the HDD but the problem has not improved.

It froze for 10 seconds when writing this message.

I figured it out. My Prescott core and the bios are not entirely compatible for hyperthreading. Disabling that in the bios fixed the problem.
