Bottom line: Barring any production delays, Tesla's new Roadster will likely be the quickest production car ever made when it rolls off the assembly line in 2020. It probably won't touch the Koenigsegg Agera RS on the top end but from a dig and in the quarter, it'll be tough to beat.

Tesla has published new photos of its upcoming Roadster zipping along a mountain road.

The car made an appearance at the Grand Basel car show in Switzerland this week although as Green Car Reports highlights, it was just a mock-up that lacked an interior and powertrain.

Tesla unveiled the new roadster in late 2017, promising a 2020 launch with a 200 kWh battery that’ll deliver a range of around 620 miles. It aims to be the quickest production car ever with a claimed 0-60 speed of 1.9 seconds, 0-100 coming in 4.2 seconds and a quarter mile time of 8.8 seconds. Tesla says it’ll have a top speed in excess of 250 mph.

Jay Leno recently spent some time with the new Roadster and even got to experience its insane acceleration. If you’re an adrenaline junkie like me, that looks like loads of fun.

The Tesla Roadster carries a base price of $200,000 with Founders Series (limited to 1,000 reservations) going for $250,000. In the meantime, Tesla will have its hands full fulfilling Model 3 orders.

The Grand Basel show in Basel runs through September 9.

Barring any production delays - that's a big if at this point. Mock up without an interior or power train. Definitely encouraging that they will hit their production goals. ;)

Yes, makes much more sense to send their test prototype and let it sit idle there for the duration of the show and shipping.
I guess that is dangerous though because Tesla's explode and can kill 100's of people and start a war in Iraq and when it blows a tyre babies are killed in Africa and you should sell your stock now before you hurt our dependency on oil. I mean we all die because of solar power radiation and such.

Looks like an AliExpress version of an F-Type, the Edison Type-F.

Musk is a complete *****! Instead of making affordable 15-30 K electric cars for regular consumers who make most of the company revenue, he is opted to make this to please the rich!

1000 times $250K is $250 million, far less than $5 billion that Tesla needs to save the company!

Battery tech hasn't advanced enough to make a car that cheap with the same level of performance and style a Tesla has. No car manufacturer can afford to make similar EVs at that price range and expect to pull a profit.

Stop looking for handouts from Elon, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and make enough money to afford a quarter million dollar car. Problems solved.

"Battery tech hasn't advanced enough to make a car that cheap with the same level of performance and style a Tesla has."

Disagree... Car battery can be produced economically. Affordable electric cars are focused on -you guessed it- affordability. Performance is not a concern. Other factors such as environment play a big role...

You don't get it...regular consumers do not want similar electric vehicles...they want more affordable EVs similar to Nissan Leaf...

"Stop looking for handouts from Elon, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and make enough money to afford a quarter million dollar car. Problems solved."

Your sarcasm is tasteless!

You're comparing apples to oranges.

The Tesla Model 3 has twice the range of a Nissan Leaf for $19k more, even less once you factor in the savings and tax credits. The Chevy Bolt is $3k less than the Tesla Model 3, and gets nearly 100 miles less than the Model 3. Plus the Leaf and Bolt look like garbage comparatively speaking. I will gladly pay the Tesla "premium" to have a quality vehicle with far superior battery life.

Go buy a Nissan Leaf if you're concerned about the economic side. Clearly Tesla vehicles aren't geared towards your checkbook.
