The European Union wants all mobile devices on a universal charging standard

Once again the EU leads the way with good common sense that is directed to the benefit of the citizen rather than the corporation. America once had this distinction but has long sense sacrificed common sense to profitability. We are rapidly approaching the day with these corporations will no longer have a target market because nobody will be able to afford their products ...... think of it as a form of "industrial counter-revolution" ...

Apple needs to resist this as much as possible. If they have to, don't sell in the EU at all. Make those commies and socialists fight to get Apple products from the internet sellers.

When government interferes with private companies it stifles innovation.

This comment is utter nonsense and you got shut down so quickly.

???

That's the wrong way to think about it.

The corporations CAN'T make products people can't afford because they will go out of business.

It's supply and demand pure and simple.

If they make products the people can't afford, then people won't or can't buy them and their sales decline till they go bankrupt.

The Free Market will decide if their product is worth buying and will meet the product at a price the market will bear.

the ultimate goal of corporations is to earn profit by making a product that strike a balance between affordable production, quality, desireability and profitability.

Apple has 100% succeeded in doing so.

That's why Toyota and Honda sell more cars than Lamborghini and Bugatti.

The free market is ALWAYS right.

Makes good sense. The EU must have asked Trump they could never figure out something so sensible on their own

About friggin' time. I need a dedicated charger for the iPhone, which is useless for EVERYTHING ELSE. By the way, I also need a dedicated charger for my Watch, that also happens to be useless for EVERY OTHER DEVICE ON THE PLANET.

iPhone - Lightning

Well, no you don't, you can easily make do with one charger and several cables. Much lighter and easier to deal with. You can even do it with one cable and a couple of adapters.

The EU, and myself!

I'm still frustrated that random devices like my (new!!!) Xbox One controller rely on Micro-USB connectors. I usually have them lying around, but they either don't work, or are too short to be useful.

I like the idea of a single type of connector, but why is EU concerned with this? They got other problems to solve.

How is this creating any additional waste from chargers? They already all have the exact same USB plug. What's different is the cable. I've charged my Android phone on an Apple charger many times.

The solutions to the real problems (they don't want to acknowledge exist) is something never discussed. So they do this and make people happy....

What? Not about Government. Is about Regulation. Makes sense to have a Standard. Like USB. Is same on all. Think your mind is confused. Government are in bed with Apple. Stifles innovation?! Maybe the maddest thing I've ever heard. They deliberate stifle in order to drip feed products for max profits. Are you being sarcastic maybe? Cos cannot be serious. If so then I'm lost for words really.

I feel your pain. Have gone through 10's of micro USB cables and Xbox 360 / Xbox 1 controllers using on PC throughout the years. Weak connection, cant stand wear. Makes the port loose and the cable ill fitting. Total crap. USB C would be miles better. Come on World - supposed to be the future, its 2020 fgs. Tech from the past remains current somehow.

When it comes to the building of PCs, I'm thankful for standards. I'm not a collectivist by any stretch, but there's no sense in creating more wastes than necessary. If I have to be categorized, then I'm a conservationist.

Sounds like you either A) forgets to charge your controller every time B) using with PC and doesn't know that there is a dongle to use wirelessly C) it has a bad battery and can't hold a charge for more than an hour

What on earth are you talking about?

Remember France's response to Google's growing dominance in the search space, twenty years ago?

There's are reason nothing innovative every comes out of Europe - its interest in equality of outcomes stifles any impulse to create and improve. Had they stumbled onto this brilliant piece of rule-making five years ago, wireless charging would never have gotten off the ground.
