I think this awkward phrase was used because some younger people nowadays would not know that a vacuum tube was an active component that could be used to amplify signals, like a transistor. So he was referring to the vacuum tube as a kind of transistor, because it did the same thing.What is a vacuum tube transistor? I have never heard of one.
