  1. i was the dealing with the whole NT authority\system shutting down my laptop last night. i installed the patch and shut off my remote registry service as well as set my RPC failures to take no action (so i could actually download the patch without my laptop shutting down). seemed to have worked, but then the strangest thing happened....i shutdown my laptop for the night thinking all was well, but in the morning when go to use the phone it turned out the modem on my laptop was still active even with the laptop powered down. has this happened to anyone before? are the two events related?

Well I know my parents have had this problem. It was simply the modem didn't disconnect properly, so it thought you were still connected even when you weren't.

The only way I found to fix this was to log back into your service and then quit. This will disconnect the modem properly. I'm not sure why it happened when the laptop was off, but it could be as simple as it thought you were still connected.
