It seems to be a new trend in the video game industry ( allthough so far mostly on consoles ).

I'm refering to the Cel Shading techniques which give the graphics a cartoon look. On certain games, the effect is quite nice & doesn't seem too out of place.

On the other hand, for a FPS, I don't know how it's going to come out.

Here's an example : XIII by Ubi Soft

PS. before anyone starts beating down on me with a steel pole, I know that XIII is first of all a comic.

Ehehehehe...

I can't say I like that or that I don't...

I think it would be good in the cutscenes. Like Max Payne.

I think I'd actually have to play that game to know if I'd like it.

Seems a bit ahh...odd.

Definitely a change from near-photorealism found in most games.

Ooh, wouldn't cel-shading work great on old machines?

In that last pic it really does look like a cartoon. The guy looks completely different from the surrounding terrain, thus throwing me off...

It looks a little like some of the lame Java games I play...

It's just like all other 3D bells and whistles.

One can create a stylish atmosphere that sends shivers down your spine or you can make a horrid piece of s*** that slows your machine to a crawl and looks awful.

It would also offer an alternative to those guys who are desperately trying to imitate real world (poorly).
Instead of looking at things that are trying to look real, you can see a cartoon-style object that doesn't even try to be something from our world and is good at that.

Cel shading can be done very well and make a game look quite attractive. I have Auto Modellista for the PS2 (import) and it looks quite nice. Also, to see some good cel shading in action follow these links:

Zelda #2

Hey, Pappy - i love manga PORN movies....:p

Only j/k;)

To tell the truth, i havn't really seen any manga movies, only short clips...

Has kind of a comic book look about it if you ask me.
I like the idea of Cel Shading for some things though. The way it is used in the new Zelda is great, but using it in an FPS like UT or Doom would just make them look dumb.

Rusty, You mean you have never watched Akira, 3X3 Eye or Cry Freeman, Or the Guyver stuff...
Classic stuff.
Played Jetset Radio game on the Xbox. The Cell shading looks cool for that. But as pointed out for fps I don't know if it would work. A lot of stealthy fps games require you to have reasonably drab clothes to not be seen too easily. I'm wondering how cell shaded figures would do in a cell shaded environment.

Sounds like pop groups...:p ;)

Nope, sorry - never heard of them

You recommend them?? Maybe i ought to have a look??

Well XIII came with my 6600GT & now that I've played it, I love it. Today's games tend to think realism is the only way to go. I have to say Cell Shading (even in a FPS) is very refreshing. I definitly recommend to anyone looking for a change.:)

PS. I also have Zelda the Wind Waker & yes it's absolutely superb.
