Toshiba A10 laptop battery status unknown

Getting an X through the battery on the status indicator. Win XP SP2 updater fails with can't update unless on line power (which I was on at the time). Battery works and charges. Same symptoms with another battery. Works fine other than that but it would be nice to fix this. Got it this way. Anybody have any ideas ?
