Trouble adding SATA card and drive to system

Hi people, i wonder if you can help.
I have an ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard and have been running it fine for a long while with 2 hard drives. I want to add a third so i bought a maxxor SATA drive and a SATA controller.

My situation is this. I can boot up with my primary IDE hard drive with the SATA disk with no problems.
But, if i also connect my 2nd IDE hard drive, boot up fails when windows starts with a continual beep - no breaks, just beeeeeeeeeeeep.
This isn't the usual POST beeping.

Any suggestions?

How could the second IDE hard drive conflict with the SATA drive?

If there is a resource conflict windows usually lets you know. I suppose one avenue to follow is that SATA devices can be set native or legacy. If I understand it correctly (and I may not!) setting it to native allows a wider range of system resources to be used. There is also another setting in BIOS that has something to do with this and I suggest you look at yoiur mobo manual.

How many devices can you have? I have Sata 1 and 2 on an Intel ICH5R controller and also Sata 3 and 4 on an onboard Promise controller. This allows me a wide choice.

Good luck.
