Tryin To Get An Old PC Running Again

I have an old HP Pavilion that has been through some things. It was a family pc so it has had many users and I don't necessarily know everything on it. I went off to college so I'm sure it wasn't taken care of and there should be plenty of malware on it. While I was away my uncle changed the OS from Windows ME to 2000 Professional. Ive recently tried to use it but it seems like the CD-Rom drive no longer works and I cant even load the various protection programs from a cd I created. Can anybody tell me whats wrong???

Check that the CDROM isnt disabled, if so try and install the newest driver version.

Is the CD drive visible in the BIOS and does it show up on the drive list when the system is booting?
Does the drive tray open and close OK?
With the power off, check that the power and signal cables are connected to the drive.
Next - W2KPro should install drivers automatically - check in My Compouter to see if the drive is listed. Also Check in Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager for a DVD/CD ROM drive listing.
