I have a single core Intel Pentium 4 Processor. My motherboard supports both dual and single core processors( ASUS P5DW2 Premium).

In task manager despite having a single core I see two CPU usage graphs. Is this a problem or slowing my computer down? If so is there a way I can disable it?

You have a single-core hyperthreading processor. HT is an Intel technology that makes a single CPU core look like two. Whether HT slows you down or makes things faster, depends on what exactly you do with your computer. You can try disabling HT in the system BIOS and see if anything changes.
