unmountable boot volume

hi there
having trouble installing windows xp pro on a external hard drive which i have conected to my desktop pc.
i use the windows xp disk to install it and all goes well till it has to reboot .
u get the windows xp pro screen for a second the u get a error message
' unmountable boot volume '
what am i doing wrong
didnt have this problem when i installed windows 98se
any ideas....
